Norwalk outbreak!

So my hospital unit officially declared a Norwalk virus outbreak yesterday! I was working on Wednesday and that morning, we had a handful of patients with these GI symptoms: nausea, vomitting, diarrhea... yuck! Anyways, we sent samples to the virology lab at CHEO and isolated these patients.

Yesterday, tests came back and found at least 3 patients positive for small rounds virus! Last night after supper, I started feeling nauseous and vomitted several times during the night... and apparently, so did another nurse on my unit.

Anyways, so far I haven't had any of those symptoms for 12 hours...  so I hope it's all gone! Not a fun feeling... let me tell you! And according to hospital policy, I can't go into work for 48 hours! That may be the only good thing that has come out of this...

Since C&MA Canada has created the Five S Venture (not sure why this page doesn’t include the most recent addition – Sea to Sea), we came up with my very own Five “S” (Ad)ventures!!

  1. Sushi - I've always got a craving for yummy maki rolls... and today, the Loblaws sushi just didn't quite hit the spot
  2. Shopping - of course I love shopping... but I also do a lot of returns.... however, that doesn't start with "s"
  3. Scrapbooking – I’m soooo slow but I enjoy it very much! Card-making is fun too but you have to give them away... instead of looking at it over and over again!
  4. Sewing  - this is my newest hobby so that I can learn to do my own minor alterations and save $8-10 from hemming each pair of pants!
  5. School – probably my least favourite, but the one I need to focus on the most! Luckily, I’ve only got 2 courses left. Yay!

I should've probably included Starbucks but I've been better lately and haven't been drinking them weekly, minus my trip to Vancouver since they are on every corner in Vancouver. On Robson street, there are even TWO Starbucks on diagonal corners... as if they both get enough business!

So I'm in Montreal right now visiting my friend J* and she's been taking us to some delicious places  to eat.

On Friday night, we went to a vegan place for dinner called Aux Vivres  (on boul. St- Laurent). Yeah, if you know me, you're probably thinking, "What? no meat?!? Guess Mil didn't eat anything at all!" But I ate and ate and was soooo full afterwards! I started with a potato soup followed by a burger with a HUGE portobello mushroom (which was yummy and delicious) with the usual lettuce, tomato, pickle, etc. and potato wedges on the side with a nice chipotle ketchup sauce! My friends had these rice bowls that were filled with different veggies and you're given a sauce to pour over it all... it reminded me a little of those vietnamese vermicelli bowls that I love!

On Saturday, we met up with our friends M & S* and had brunch at L'Avenue (on Mont-Royal). As far as I know, there aren't any similar places back home and I wish there were!! I ordered eggs benedict with spinach, mushrooms and goat cheese and it was sooooo goood! It also came with a bowl of potatoes and a skewer of fruit! Other people had omelettes and usual breakfast food. The bathrooms are worth seeing because it's dark (painted black) with planned graffiti, everything works by sensors, and there is an LCD tv so you can watch movies while you're doing your thing! You know it's a good restaurant when there's a line-up out the door as you're leaving!

more to come... maybe pictures too...

Day 6: The OC Transpo Strike

To say that this strike has not affected me and those around me would be lying...

  • my coworker has taken the cab to and from work... that costs about $40/day!
  • my poor mom has woken up early enough to drive me to work... and I work at 7am!!
  • my dad missed a meeting because he couldn't get to work - his boss covered for him!
  • a friend of mine slept at school because it was easier than going home and going back to school the next day
  • I saw a man holding up his thumb today on Woodroffe... and he didn't look like the usual hitchhiker with the big backpack, cardboard sign, dog, etc. He looked like he was just trying to get to work!

Sigh.. come back, OC Transpo!! How will I get to work?! And I need to use up the rest of my orange bus tickets by the end of the year...
